When to Go. Where to Go

Cambodia: A summary

Cambodia is warm year-round with temperatures rarely dipping below 68°F (20°C), whenever you go. Seasons are broken into wet and dry season. Wet season, from May to October, is usually marked by a brief downpour in the afternoon. This rarely affects travel plans and still includes many hours of bright sunshine, and is known locally as green season as the countryside springs to life. Travel in the dry season, from November to March, is marked by hot dry days.

The temples of Angkor

Dry season temperatures, from November to April, range from a 68°F (20°C) minimum to highs in the 80s (high 20s), with maximums reaching 95°F (35°C) in March. Rainfall is minimal so roads can be a little dusty, while the leafy areas around the temples are easier to traverse. This is a busy time of year to travel, so some sites and temples can be crowded.

April and May are hot and it is not uncommon for temperatures to reach above 100°F (38°C). The green season from May to October is the best time for seeing full moats around the temples of Angkor, dramatic skies and verdant rice-paddies. Minimum temperatures are around 75°F (24°C) and maximums start to drop from May and stay around 90°F (32°C) for the rest of the season. Rain is tropical with refreshing afternoon downpours

Tonle Sap Lake

Tonle Sap Lake - South East Asia's largest - fills during the green season and, while touring is possible year-round, water levels can affect which parts of the lake you may visit. The best time to go is between July and December.

Battambang

Battambang has the same wet and dry seasons as nearby Siem Reap. If planning on traveling by unpaved roads, avoid September and October as heavy rains can cause delays.

Phnom Penh

Cambodia’s capital is warm year-round with tropical rains from May to October, and hotter, drier days from November to April. In the green season from May to October, temperatures range from lows of 71°F (22°C) to highs of 93°F (34°C) in May. From November to April lows rise to 77°F (25°C) with highs around the low 90s (low to mid 30s), and rainfall peaks during September and October. The best time to go is November to February when temperatures and rainfall are lowest.

South Coast

If you are heading to the beach at Kep or Sihanoukville travel between November and April for the most sunshine and temperatures averaging 75°F (24°C), or December through June for the clearest water (if your main aim is scuba diving) with temperatures averaging 80°F (27°C).

Cambodian riel (R) is the official tender in Cambodia but the US dollar is the de facto currency and the most useful for the average visitor to Cambodia. Most hotels and restaurants, shops, taxis, buses and airlines set their prices in US dollars. Even the visa prices and departure taxes are set in US dollars. To give an idea of the purchasing power of Cambodian Riel, below are examples of cost of items, in Riel, in Cambodia:

The smallest can (330ml) of Coca-Cola  in Cambodia can be bought for 1,800 Riel (about US$0.45).

A loaf of plain ordinary bread is 4,800 Riel (US$1.20).

A plate of fried rice mixed with meat and herbs is at least 8,000 Riel (US$2.00) up to 12,800 Riel (US$3.20).
