Places: Agra | Activities: See the Taj Mahal at sunset, sunrise, and full moon nights; explore the Agra Fort; see the ghost capital city of Emperor Akbar
Our nation’s capital makes for a great weekend getaway – some of India’s biggest historical icons like the Red Fort and the Qutab Minar combine with fabulous shopping, delicious North Indian food, and a truly stately atmosphere. Here you can see the two faces of India – Old Delhi and its narrow streets, bustling markets and an assault on the senses, and New Delhi, with its wide tree-lined avenues, stately buildings and extravagant villas, and the high energy of international business and government. And while you are here for the weekend, why not take the opportunity to take a day-trip to Agra, home of one of the world’s most romantic buildings – the Taj Mahal.
Arrive New Delhi by a morning flight from Chennai or Bangalore, and transfer to your hotel. Then depart for the walled city of Shahjahanabad in Old Delhi that encloses the mighty Jama Masjid and Red Fort. Enjoy a delightful rickshaw ride along Chandni Chowk. After lunch at one of the many market restaurants in New Delhi, visit the Humayun’s Tomb, the resting place of one of the early Mughal rulers, and the inspiration behind the Taj Mahal. Then drive through New Delhi, the 9th version of this great city and built by Lutyens. Lastly go back in time to the 12th century at the Qutb Minar in South Delhi, the massive victory tower of the first Islamic rulers of India – the Afghans. In the evening, head out to Hauz Khas village for some sundown exploration of this urban refuge with its shops and galleries and well-lit 14th century ruins.
Take the early morning fast train to Agra. Arrive into Agra and you are met with a private car and expert guide to visit the Taj Mahal. Have lunch at one of the many fine hotels located nearby. Then in the afternoon, visit the Agra Fort before you take the evening train back to Delhi.
In the morning, go on a guided city walk with the Salaam Balaak Trust in New Delhi Railway Station and Paharganj, visiting their shelters, contact points and interacting with street children. Immerse yourself in real Delhi and enjoy a thoroughly local experience. In the afternoon, enjoy some great shopping at Khan Market or Santushti, in the diplomatic enclaves. Take an evening flight back home to Chennai or Bangalore.
