South Africa is one of Africa’s most exciting dive destinations. This is because the warm waters of the Indian Ocean collide with the cooler waters of the Atlantic Ocean, creating an amazing diversity of marine life. As you travel westwards down the coast from Maputaland to Cape Town, the range and type of marine life changes dramatically – giving you both the intimate calm diving of shallow reefs filled with soft and hard coral, to the adrenaline-pumping encounter with great white sharks.
Your dive holiday starts with a day trip to the Aliwal Shoal, south of Durban, considered to be one of the top 10 dive sites in the world. Here you will meet some of the most diverse variety of sharks – from ragged-tooth sharks, tiger sharks, to hammerheads and even whale sharks. Then it’s a longish drive up to Sodwana Bay in the far north, where Africa’s southern most coral reefs bring you one of the world’s richest numbers of fish species, with excellent visibility and shallow dives in the lovely warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Lastly, you will fly to Cape Town, where you will come face to face with one of the ocean’s most majestic predators – the Great White Shark, off Dyer Island, through the safe protection of a cage dive.

There are many varied dive sites on the shoal, some of which are suitable only for advanced divers, but definitely lots to please all. Return to Durban in the later afternoon.
