Beat the heat of summer and head for the hills! From here descend to the mighty tropical forests of Masinagudi teeming with elephant, bison and the elusive tiger. Stay at a private jungle retreat and go on open-top jeep safaris at sunset. The best time to visit this region is from April to June. Here is a sample itinerary that will help you plan your holiday.
Fly Chennai direct to Coimbatore transfer to Coonoor to stay at a quaint colonial heritage hotel or a stunning mountainside resort. In the afternoon, visit a tea estate and its factory followed by a trip to a tea boutique to do some tea-tasting.
Take the historic Blue Mountain Express on a stunning railway journey from Coonoor to Ootacamund, the largest town of the Nilgiris. At Ootacamund, set-off on a full-day of adventure - walking and driving in some of the remote wilderness areas of the Nilgiris accompanied by a local host and guide.
Spend the morning at an organic cheese-making farm. Relax at your hotel in the afternoon.
Drive down to Masinagudi in the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary and stay at a 300-acre private jungle retreat for 2-nights. Go on sunset and sunrise jeep safaris to spot some of the big game. Relax and enjoy the peace and tranquility of your retreat and the lush green surroundings. Read a book, watch a movie, play a game, or just count the stars at night!
Drive to Mysore and board the afternoon train to Chennai.
There are a number of other places you can add to your program: Mysore – famous for its palace, forts, and colourful markets; Bangalore – stopping over for some fine food, drink and shopping; or if you crave the city buzz (and hordes of tourists), then switch quiet Coonoor for the more popular Ootacamund.
