This one-week trip takes the traveller across Tamilnadu, an ancient land influenced by the rich architectural legacy of the Chola dynasty and the colonial heritage of the French & British. The Gaelic ambience of Pondicherry, and the time spent at a rural homestay, enhance the traditional temple tour and make this a diverse and rewarding holiday. The best time to visit this region is from August to March. Here is a suggested itinerary to help you plan your holiday.

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1: Chennai - Mamallapuram & Pondicherry

Drive to Pondicherry via the world-famous 5th century rock-temples of Mamallapuram and the international commune of Auroville. Arrive Pondicherry and in the evening take a guided-heritage walk of the French Quarter.

Day 2 & 3: Pondicherry - Tanjore & Tiruchirapalli

Drive to Tanjore for two-nights, the ancient capital of the Cholas visiting the ancient temples at Gangaikondacholapuram and Darasuram. Visit the 11th century Brihadeeswara Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and make a half-day excursion to Srirangam, India’s largest temple complex, and climb the winding 437 steps up the Rock Fort Temple.

Day 4: Tanjore - Chettinad

Travel south to Karaikudi, the home of the wealthy Chettiar community and marvel at their fabulous sprawling mansions built in the early 20th century. Sample the unique cuisine of the Chettinad, and lose yourself in the antique shops along their dusty streets.

Day 5: Chettinad - Madurai

Drive to Madurai and visit the Meenakshi Temple, a wonderful example of Dravidian architecture. Nine gopurams (pagodas) soar skyward, a riot of colour depicting gods, goddesses and animals. Return to the temple after sunset and join the throng of devotees amidst the smoke-filled incense, oil-lamps, and chanting of prayers in Sanskrit.

Day 6 & 7: Madurai - Palani Foothills

Travel two-hours north to your final stop – a small, but beautiful rural retreat in the foothills of the Western Ghats. Unwind and relax with your hosts and share experiences of your trip over good food and drink. Explore the neighbouring village and people, its paddy fields and fruit orchards to experience the pulse of the Tamil heartland. Drive, fly, or take the train back to Chennai

There are a number of extensions you could make – cool-off in the hills of Kodaikanal, a former British hill-station; drive up to Thekkady in Kerala State, known for its wildlife; stopover in Tranquebar, a former Danish settlement and now witnessing a quiet revival.
